Visual Poetry by Joel Chace

Joel Chace has published poetry and prose poetry in print and electronic magazines such as 6ix, The Tip of the Knife, Counterexample Poetics, OR, Country Music, and Jacket.  He has published more than a dozen print and electronic collections.  BlazeVox Books published his CLEANING THE MIRROR:  NEW AND SELECTED POEMS, and from Paper Kite Press is MATTER NO MATTER, another full-length collection.  Recently out from Country Valley Press is SCAFFOLD, the first part of an ongoing poetic sequence, "(b)its," from Meritage Press, A SCRIPT, from Otoliths Books, SHARPSBURG, from Cy Gist Press, and BLAKE'S TREE, from Blue & Yellow Dog Press

Explanation of Method

"The work I am submitting is part of a developing collection under the working title "period (s) now."  After creating and/or collecting 100 pairs of sentences, I am now literally cutting up, with scissors, each sentence into its component words and punctuation marks, and then sprinkling or dropping them onto a blank sheet of paper.  Once each component finds its resting place, I affix it, using good old invisible tape.  My hope is that each completed page contains two sentences
(separated by over sized periods) that appear to have snowed down to rest."

These are extraordinary, and I find myself learning from them with every new viewing. In fact, I urge anyone here to study the poems, then return to them again later and verify my claim that these works modulate and shimmer in surprising ways just as more conventionally- lineated poems will, just as paintings must in different kinds of light, in our shifting modes and moods. These images put me in mind of the remarkable Hank Lazer notebooks from 2011, not that the methodology is the same or even that the intensionalities are parallel (though perhaps in some ways...) but, rather, what they show us about words themselves, what words are doing, and even more strangely, HOW they seem to be doing it--"seem" I say, as I imagine we will never finally know. But I know this: Joel Chace, you are making essential art.
